Indices rebound as oil slides to $102 ๐Ÿ“‰ Low jobless claims reading supports US dollar

U.S. index futures are rebounding sharply as oil prices fall and bond prices rise. S&P 500 futures are up around 0.9%, while Nasdaq 100 futures are gaining 1.1%.

  • Brent crude is down nearly 3% today, falling toward $102 per barrel after two consecutive sessions of losses. Lower oil prices are easing concerns that Middle East supply disruptions could continue to fuel inflation.
  • The U.S. 10-year Treasury yield is down 5 bps to 4.97%. The U.S. dollar remains relatively stable, while gold is heading for its first positive session of the week.
  • U.S. initial jobless claims came in below expectations at 196K, compared with 206K forecast and 206K previously.
  • Markets are still assessing the implications of the Fed’s latest decision. The central bank raised interest rates and signaled further tightening, while the median FOMC projection points to one more hike this year and a total of three additional increases over the next 12 months.
  • According to Axios, Donald Trump is set to meet Persian Gulf leaders next week on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York to discuss the next steps in the conflict. Oil prices are also being pressured by signs that the risk of further Middle East supply disruptions may gradually be easing.
