Major U.S. stock market indices rose on Monday, as artificial intelligence-related companies rebounded from the sharp sell-off the previous week. Falling oil prices provided additional support, and investors are positioning themselves ahead of key earnings reports scheduled for this week.
As a reminder, both the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq Composite posted their steepest weekly declines on Friday since late June. The sell-off was driven by concerns that higher interest rates could curb investment in AI infrastructure, which hit tech companies the hardest—particularly data center operators. The sell-off reflected growing investor anxiety about how the costly expansion of AI computing power will be financed—a question that is weighing increasingly heavily on the companies that form the foundation of the U.S. bull market.
Memory and semiconductor companies are performing the best today. Broadcom is up 2.2%, and Micron is surging 4.3%. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index (SOX) rose 2.5% and was on track to break an eight-day losing streak—the longest since October 2008. Amazon rose 2.3% after Morgan Stanley named the e-commerce and cloud computing company its “top pick.”
Goldman Sachs’ move also proved to be an important growth driver; the firm raised its rating on CoreWeave to “buy” from “neutral,” arguing that the recent sell-off presents a buying opportunity. Shares of the data center operator were up 0.2% at the latest close, after plummeting more than 25% the previous week due to concerns about its $50 billion debt.
