Economic calendar: Central bankers in focus

8:56 am 17 June 2024

  • Despite worse sentiment in Asia, futures point to higher opening in Europe
  • A light macro calendar ahead, however, some volatility may be provided by bankers' speeches

Friday's trading on Wall Street ended in mixed sentiment. The Nasdaq technology index was the only benchmark to record any intraday gains, nevertheless they did not exceed 0.15%.

The very weak sentiment from Friday continued today in APAC markets as well, with Japan's Nikkei losing 2.05% and Korea's KOSPI down 0.41%. The Hang Seng is doing marginally better today, but the better sentiment here is offset by declines in mainland Chinese markets.

On the other hand, however, futures point to a higher opening for today's session in Europe. The macro calendar itself for today's session does not abound with an excessive number of key data readings for investors, nevertheless some market volatility may be provided today by speeches by Fed and ECB bankers.

Top events of the day:

  • 09:00 am BST - ECB's Lane's speech.
  • 10:00 am BST  - ECB's Lagarde speech.
  • 12:30 am BST - ECB's De Guindos' speech.
  • 01:30 pm BST - USA, NY Empire data for June.
