Morning wrap (01.04.2021)

  • US indices finished yesterday's trading higher. S&P 500 gained 0.36%, Nasdaq added 1.54% and Russell 2000 moved 1.13% higher. Dow Jones dropped 0.26%

  • Upbeat moods dominate in Asia as well. Nikkei added 0.7%, S&P/ASX 200 and Kospi moved around 0.6% higher while indices from China traded 0.1-0.8% higher

  • DAX futures point to a higher opening of the European cash session

  • US President Biden said that contracts under his 8-year $2.25 billion infrastructure deal will only be awarded to US companies

  • French President Macron announced a national lockdown that will last for at least one month starting from Saturday. Japan will impose stricter Covid-19 restrictions in Osaka and 2 other prefectures. Canada will put Ontario province in a 4-week lockdown

  • Around 640 thousand new coronavirus cases were reported yesterday, the highest number since January 22. Daily death toll of 12.2 thousand was the highest since February 12

  • United Nations said that North Korea is probably able to arm intercontinental missiles with nuclear warheads

  • Chinese manufacturing PMI (Caixin) for March came in at 50.6, down from 50.9 in February (exp. 51.2)

  • Australian retail sales dropped 0.8% MoM in February (exp. -1.1% MoM)

  • Bitcoin trades near $58,500

  • Gold trades higher while other precious metals lag. Oil and agricultural commodities gain while industrial metals trade mixed

  • USD and JPY are the best performing major currencies while AUD and NZD lag the most
