9:34 am 21 June 2024

  • European indices set for flat opening
  • Flash PMI indices for June from Europe and US

European index futures point to a more or less flat opening of the cash session on the Old Continent today. This comes after a rather down Asia-Pacific session, during which majority of regional indices traded lower. JPY is the worst performing major currency after core-core CPI inflation (excluding food and energy) decelerated in May to the lowest level since September 2022.GBP jumped after release of much better than expected UK retail sales data for May, but those gains have been mostly erased already.

Economic calendar for the day ahead is packed with releases of flash PMI data for June. Attention during the European session will be primarily on releases from France and Germany at 8:15 am BST and 8:30 am BST, respectively. Economists expect a small improvement in manufacturing and services sectors, although manufacturing sector is expected to remain in contraction zone. On the other hand, US PMI indices at 2:45 pm BST are expected to show small improvement in both sectors, with both sectors remaining in expansion territory.
