OpenAI plans to continue aggressive investment in AI infrastructure despite growing public opposition to data center development in the US. CFO Sarah Friar stressed that the midterm election results do not change the company’s strategic direction, as demand for computing power continues to rise alongside the development of new models and services. For markets, this is a signal that the AI investment cycle may not slow significantly even as regulatory barriers and local restrictions increase. For sentiment around infrastructure suppliers, chipmakers, networking companies and cooling-system providers, OpenAI’s statement is positive, although local regulation, energy costs and access to financing are becoming increasingly important. The announcement was welcomed by markets, with the Nasdaq 100 gaining nearly 2% and Nvidia shares rising 4%.
OpenAI does not intend to slow investment in AI infrastructure
OpenAI CFO Sarah Friar said the company will continue investing in data centers regardless of the outcome of the US midterm elections. OpenAI remains heavily dependent on growing computing capacity to train models and serve users, which means it wants to maintain a rapid pace of infrastructure expansion. According to Friar, this will require continued cooperation with hyperscalers as well as additional capital raising to keep up with customer demand.
Opposition to data centers is growing, but the strategy remains unchanged
Across 41 local ballot measures in 10 states, voters overwhelmingly supported restrictions on data centers or rejected measures designed to encourage further development. Concerns focus mainly on the environmental impact of such projects, higher energy costs and potential effects on the labor market. OpenAI therefore plans to engage more closely with local communities and build broader support for new projects. At the same time, regulatory pressure is rising just as investors are becoming more concerned about financing costs, growing AI-sector debt and the profitability of the next wave of infrastructure spending.
