Coronavirus: market update

• The total number of confirmed coronavirus cases surpassed 13.05 million of which more than 571 000 died and over 7.24 million recovered.
• US remains by far the worst-affected country with over 3.41 million cases. Number of infections in Brazil, the second worst-hit country, surpassed 1.86 million. India, which is the third most infected country reported over 879 000 cases.

• Florida reported a record number of 15,000 new coronavirus cases  on Sunday. Florida's daily increases in cases have already surpassed the highest daily tally reported by any European country during the height of the pandemic there. It has also broken New York state's record of 12,847 new cases recorded on April 10.

• In Victoria state, authorities on Monday reported 177 new coronavirus cases, compared to 273 cases recorded on the previous day.

• Argentina exceeded 100,000 cases of coronavirus infections on Sunday as it struggles to contain rising number of cases despite a strict quarantine imposed on the capital Buenos Aires and its surroundings.

• The United States has the highest death toll in the world with over 137,000 casualties. However Fatalities in Brazil are rising rapidly and the country already have the second-largest number of deaths in the world. Brazil's Health Ministry reported over 72,000 deaths. The United Kingdom has reported over 44,000 fatalities, the highest number among all European countries and the third highest in the world.

• South Africa has the highest number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Africa and is now recording the fourth-largest daily increase in new cases worldwide.South Africa reported 12,058 new coronavirus cases on Sunday, bringing the total to 276,242. Deaths rose by 108 to 4,079.
Only eight countries in Africa - Algeria, Cape Verde, Djibouti, Egypt, Mauritius, Namibia, Seychelles, and South Africa - record more than 75% of deaths, according to the United Nations.Source: Financial Times
