Daily Summary: Indices Pull Back Under Pressure from Oil Prices

USA

  • Thursday’s session on Wall Street unfolded in a pessimistic mood, though without sharp price swings. Declines of up to about 1.2% on the major indices were pared back later in the session. The Russell led losses, with its futures down about 0.9%. US100 followed. US30 and US500 are holding up better, with losses reduced to around 0.6%. This behavior implies a move away from risk in response to rising inflation expectations.
  • A potentially high impact item, though still with a low implied probability, is the reported “dividend” that the D. Trump administration is said to plan to pay to “all adult Americans” if the Republican Party wins the midterm elections. The figure mentioned was USD 5,000.
  • The Houthi group has taken control of a significant portion of the coastline. The market is reacting negatively to this news, fearing a resumption of attacks on ships in the Red Sea.
  • US 10-year Treasury yields are moving very close to the psychological 5% level (currently around 4.92%). Such a high level could provoke renewed intervention by the Treasury Department and/or the Fed.

The Dutch and German indices are the laggards, with futures down about 0.7%.

  • The significant deterioration in risk sentiment is weighing on the crypto market, where declines are visible across most assets today.
