The Ifo index for the German economy comes in at 88.5 points, with expectations of a drop to 86.7 points and the previous level of 88.7 points.
The assessment of the current situation falls slightly, but the assessment of the future remains unchanged, despite expectations of a sharp decline.
However, the IFO Institute's chief economist indicates that recession is still in sight, given the weak situation in terms of trade, energy and high inflation.
The GDP reading for Q2 also came as a positive surprise, indicating growth of 1.8% y/y versus expectations of 1.9% y/y and an earlier reading of 3.9% y/y.
