Economic calendar: Focus on Russia-Ukraine tensions

8:39 AM 18 February 2022
  • European market set to open flat

  • Russia-Ukraine tensions remain key driver in the markets

  • Long weekend in the US ahead

European index futures point to a flat opening of the cash session today. Situation in the eastern part of Ukraine remains tense with reports of continued shelling in the region. NATO says that Russia tries to create a situation that will justify military invasion. Meanwhile, Russia continues to say that it is withdrawing its troops from the area. Risk moods improved slightly during the Asian session on reports that US Secretary of State Blinken will meet Russian Foreign Affairs Minister Lavrov late next week. Potential Russia-Ukraine conflict remains key driver of moods in the markets. Traders should keep in mind that it is US holiday on Monday so US indices may experience some weakness as traders reduce risk exposure ahead of a long weekend.

There are no major, market-moving data releases scheduled for today. Canadian retail sales report will be released in the early afternoon and may trigger some short-term volatility jump on CAD market. USD may become more active in the afternoon and evening as 4 Fed members are set to speak.
