Top 10 most shorted US stocks

11:54 AM 28 January 2021

Massive gains could have been spotted on numerous US small-cap stocks recently as an army of retail traders grouped up at Reddit forums and decided to short-squeeze hedge funds. They seem to follow a simple strategy - buy shares of the companies that are being the most shorted by institutional investors and have a somewhat positive story accompanying. Gamestop (GME.US) is a prime example with short interest making up over 100% of equity float and speculation that vaccine rollout may help lift the business of brick-and-mortar video games retailers. Stock of the company has rallied over 1,700% so far this year!

As mania does not seem to be slowing down and stocks meeting above criteria may remain on investors' watch, we present a table of 10 stocks from Russell 3000 index with the highest short interest as percent of equity float. Table also includes data on market capitalization and year-to-date returns. All stocks from the table are available for investors on the xStation platform.

One of recent top gainers - AMC Entertainment Holdings (AMC.US) - did not make it to the top10 with a short interest representing 12.85% of equity float. A point to note is that AMC Entertainment and AMC Networks (AMCX.US - present in the table below) are two different stocks.
