The number of job openings in the US rose to a new record high of 9.209 million in May 2021, from a revised 9.193 million in April and below market expectations of 9.388 million.

- Layoffs and discharges 1386K vs 1444K last month.
Job openings increased in a number of industries with the largest gains being recorded in other services (+109,000), state and local government education (+46,000), and educational services (+35,000). On the other hand, openings decreased in arts, entertainment, and recreation (-80,000); state and local government, excluding education (-56,000); and federal government (-17,000).
