Advance estimates of U.S. retail and food services sales for June 2024, adjusted for seasonal variations and trading-day differences but not for price changes, were $704.3 billion, remaining virtually unchanged from the previous month but showing a 2.3% increase compared to June 2023. Total sales for the April through June 2024 period rose by 2.5% from the same period in the previous year. Retail trade sales decreased by 0.1% from May 2024 but increased by 2.0% year-over-year, with nonstore retailers seeing an 8.9% rise and food services and drinking places experiencing a 4.4% increase from June 2023.
The dollar strengthened after the publication, but we also saw gains in the equity market. Retail sales data for June showed a moderate stabilization in the consumer market. The lack of growth suggests stabilization, but data above expectations shows no sharp decline.
