US weekly jobless claims report and Canadian retail sales print for December were released at 1:30 pm GMT today. US report showed a lower-than-expected intial and continued claims while Canadian report turned out to be mixed - headline sales rose more than expected while core sales increased slightly less than expected.
USDCAD gained following the releases, but scale of the move was small as this report are generally considered to be of second importance. The pair is approaching 1.3500 mark.
US, jobless claims data.
- Initial jobless claims: 201k vs 217k expected (212k previously)
- Continued jobless claims: 1862k vs 1884k expected (1895k previously)
Canada, retail sales for December.
- Headline: 0.9% MoM vs 0.8% MoM expected (-0.2% MoM previously)
- Core: 0.6% MoM vs 0.7% MoM expected (-0.5% MoM previously)
