Economic calendar: NFP in the spotlight during pre-Easter lull

8:02 AM 7 April 2023
  • US index futures trade flat

  • NFP report shines in otherwise empty calendar

  • Changes to trading hours due to holiday

The final trading day of the pre-Easter week is marked with a significantly lower liquidity on the markets. This is because a number of countries, especially in Europe, are observing Good Friday today and as such there will be no stock market sessions in those countries. While US index futures will trade in shortened hours today, there will be no cash trading session on Wall Street. Changes in trading hours can be found below.

However, there is one important event scheduled for today that should be watched closely - NFP report release for March at 1:30 pm BST. Investors were recently offered a streak of rather downbeat releases from the US jobs markets, like JOLTS, ADP or jobless claims. A point to note is that the ADP report released on Wednesday not only missed expectations significantly (145k vs 200k expected) but also came in below 3-, 6- and 12-month average. Weak NFP print would confirm that the US jobs market is indeed beginning to struggle. However, it would also hint that the chance of the Fed pausing the rate hike cycle at the May meeting increases.

1:30 pm BST - US, NFP report for March.

  • Non-farm payrolls. Expected: 240k. Previous: 311k
  • Unemployment rate. Expected: 3.6%. Previous: 3.6%
  • Average earnings growth. Expected: 4.3% YoY. Previous: 4.6% YoY
