Economic calendar: Politics overshadow light calendar

8:18 AM 28 December 2020
  • UK and Canadian markets closed
  • President Trump passed the stimulus plan

It is another holiday-shortened week due to New Year with many stock indexes closed on Monday, Thursday and Friday. In the US, major data releases include, unemployment claims, wholesale inventories and goods trade balance, Case-Shiller home prices, pending home sales, Chicago PMI, and Dallas Fed Manufacturing Index. Elsewhere, China NBS PMIs will also be in the spotlight.

As is often the case on Mondays, the economic calendar is light. Macro readings that are scheduled for release seldom have an impact on the markets. Having said that, attention may be focused on politics today. US stock index futures rallied after President Trump on Sunday signed into law a $ 2.3 trillion pandemic aid, restoring unemployment benefits to millions of Americans and averting a federal government shutdown. Also the markets are expecting the UK Parliament to support the Brexit trade agreement, so any deviation could trigger volatility on GBP.
