  • Stocks in Asia traded higher during the first session of 2021. S&P/ASX 200 gained 1.5%, Kospi added 2.5% and indices from China rose. Nikkei was a laggard and dropped 0.7%

  • US futures are trading slightly lower after a record close of the year on Wall Street

  • DAX futures point to flat opening of the European session

  • Total number of confirmed coronavirus cases exceeded 85 million while more than 60 million people recovered from the virus. Death toll stands at 1.85 million

  • Japan mulls declaring a state of emergency for a month in Tokyo and 3 other nearby regions. South Korea expanded a ban on private gatherings larger than four. Additional lockdown measures in Scotland may be announced today

  • Bitcoin extended the rally and climbed towards $34,000 over the weekend. Ethereum topped $1,100 mark

  • Jack Ma, founder of Alibaba, is considered missing after being out of public for over 2 months now

  • Chinese Caixin manufacturing PMI dropped in December from 54.9 to 53 (exp. 54.7)

  • USS Nimitz aircrafts will remain in the Middle East due to Iranian threat

  • Brent and WTI trade 2% higher ahead of OPEC+ meeting aimed at determining production levels for February.

  • Precious metals gain on the back of USD weakness

  • USD and CHF are the worst performing major currencies while AUD and CAD gain the most
