SpaceX Wants to Fly Starship Almost Every Day. Musk’s Business Empire Is Betting on It

SpaceX is seeking approval to conduct as many as 456 Starship launches per year from its Texas base. That would mean more than one flight per day on average. The company is still a long way from operating at such a pace, but the plan itself illustrates how much importance Elon Musk places on transporting cargo into orbit. Starship is designed not only to carry larger payloads but also to dramatically increase the number of missions and reduce their cost through rocket reusability.

For SpaceX, this is a matter of financial significance. The company already has Starlink, a business generating billions of dollars in operating profit, but it is also funding the costly development of new ventures. In 2025, its artificial intelligence operations, including xAI, generated approximately $6.4 billion in operating losses. Capital expenditures across the group exceeded $20 billion, with a substantial share going toward AI-related infrastructure.

In this context, low-cost payload launches could be much more than a service sold to external customers. SpaceX needs rockets to expand Starlink, while xAI’s more ambitious plans call for the development of enormous computing capacity, potentially including infrastructure deployed in orbit in the future. The cheaper and more frequent launches become, the easier it will be to pursue such projects without a proportionate increase in transportation costs.

This is where Starship’s potential value lies. If the rocket can carry large payloads, return to service quickly, and fly at a high cadence, SpaceX could reduce the costs of its own ventures while offering customers capabilities that are difficult to access today. Space transportation would then cease to be merely one segment of the company’s business. Instead, it would become the backbone supporting its other operations, from satellite communications to artificial intelligence.

Of course, a plan for 456 launches per year does not mean that such a scale is already within reach. SpaceX still needs to prove that Starship can fly reliably, be prepared quickly for subsequent missions, and genuinely lower transportation costs. With projects this capital-intensive, delays matter: the money is being spent now, while the benefits depend on achieving sufficient scale in the future.

For investors watching SpaceX’s plans for a potential stock market listing, this will be a key factor in assessing the group as a whole. On one side, Starlink generates cash; on the other, xAI requires tens of billions of dollars in funding. Starship could bridge these two worlds by providing cheaper transportation for the company’s expanding businesses while creating a new service for the broader market. If this model works, the enormous investment in the rocket could prove to be an investment in a competitive advantage for the entire enterprise. If development takes longer, costs will continue to rise before the benefits needed to justify them materialize.

The most important metric, therefore, will not be the number of launch approvals SpaceX secures, but whether it can move from an ambitious plan to regular flights at an economically viable cost. That will determine whether Starship remains an extraordinarily expensive development project or becomes infrastructure that helps finance Musk’s continued expansion.
