Economic calendar: Focus on labour market reports

8:18 AM 10 January 2020
  • Labour market reports from Canada and the United States

  • Industrial production figures from France, Italy and Mexico

  • WASDE reports with quarterly stockpiles data to be released in the afternoon

7:45 am GMT - France, industrial production for November. Expected: 0.4% YoY. Previous: -0.2% YoY

9:00 am GMT - Italy, industrial production for November. Expected: -0.6% YoY. Previous: -2.4% YoY

12:00 pm GMT - Mexico, industrial production for November. Expected: -1.5% YoY. Previous: -2.4% YoY

1:30 pm GMT - Canada, labour market report for December. Data from Canada has been somewhat soft recently causing investors to think whether a rate cut is coming or not. However, Governor Poloz refrained from hitting dovish tones during speech yesterday and remained neutral. Nevertheless, another weak labour market report could change his view. Market expects that Canadian economy added 25k jobs in December.

1:30 pm GMT - US, NFP report for December. The US labour market report is the key release of the week. Reading for November was superb as the US economy added 266k jobs! A point to note is that ADP estimates released earlier this week pointed to a 202k increase in December so it looks like we are ahead of another solid reading. Market consensus hints at 160k increase while earnings growth is forecasted to remain at 3.1% YoY

3:00 pm GMT- US, wholesale inventories for November (final release). Expected: 0% MoM. Previous: 0% MoM.

5:00 pm GMT - WASDE report. The US Department of Agriculture will release the grains market report today so traders should expect elevated volatility on corn, wheat and soybean in the afternoon. Report will include Q4 stockpiles data and is expected to show lower production for all grains.
