Economic calendar: US survey data in focus

  • European markets expected to open lower

  • Video meeting of G7 finance ministers and central bankers

  • Michigan index expected at 80.8 in February

European markets are expected to launch today's cash trading lower, following a downbeat session in Asia. Economic calendar is light today with the University of Michigan index for February being the only key report scheduled for release. It is expected to show small improvement compared to January. Finance ministers and central bankers from G7 countries will hold a video meeting today. Pandemic, rising debt levels and digital taxation are among topics to be discussed.

UK GDP report for Q4 2020 was released at 7:00 am GMT. UK economy grew by 1% QoQ in Q4 2020 (exp. +0.5% QoQ). Government spending was a major driver as it increased 6.4% QoQ while the market expected 1.3% QoQ increase. UK economy shrank 9.9% in full-2020.

8:00 am GMT - Spain, CPI inflation for January (final). First release: 0.6% YoY

9:00 am GMT - Poland, GDP report for Q4 2020. Expected: -2.9% YoY. Previous: -1.5% YoY

1:30 pm GMT - Canada, wholesale sales for December. Expected: -1.5% MoM. Previous: +0.7% MoM

3:00 pm GMT - US, University of Michigan index for February (flash). Expected: 80.8. Previous: 79.0
