Economic calendar: Second-tier US data, central bankers' speeches

7:35 AM 18 May 2023
  • European indices set to open higher
  • Second-tier data from the United States, central bankers' speeches
  • Earnings from Walmart and Alibaba

European index futures point to a higher opening of the cash session today as major European benchmarks are catching up with US indices after a solid Wall Street session yesterday. AUD took a hit earlier today on a disappointing jobs report for April but has managed to regain ground since. Energy commodities and precious metals trade little changed. Major cryptocurrencies are pulling back.

Economic calendar for the day ahead includes some interesting releases but neither of them can be considered top-tier. Nevertheless, second-tier data from the US is noteworthy, especially as recession risk is on the rise. Jobless claims have been climbing since mid-March and traders are eager to see whether this trend continues, Philly Fed index is expected to show improvement while existing home sales are expected to drop compared to a month ago. Investors should keep in mind that there is a number of central bankers' speeches scheduled for today and it may be a source of FX volatility. Last but not least, among today's earnings reporters one can find Walmart and Alibaba.
