Economic calendar: US Thanksgiving, ECB minutes

8:47 AM 24 November 2022
  • European index futures point to slightly higher opening

  • ECB minutes, rate decision from Riksbank and CBRT

  • US Thanksgiving holiday

Futures market points to a slightly higher opening for major European indices today. US indices gained yesterday on somewhat dovish FOMC minutes but it did not translate into any larger and longer-lasting move, at least not yet. Indices from Asia-Pacific also traded higher today but equities from world's second largest economy lagged after China reported a new record in official new Covid cases.  AUD and JPY are the best performing major currencies while CAD and USD lag the most.

Key event of the day is the release of ECB minutes. The latest ECB meeting saw announcement of changes to TLTRO programme and a 75 basis point rate hike. Apart from ECB minutes, traders will also be offered rate decision from Riksbank and Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey today. The former is expected to deliver a 75 basis point rate hike while the latter is expected to cut rates by 150 bp.

Liquidity conditions are expected to be thinner today, especially in the afternoon, as US traders are off for Thanksgiving holiday. There will be no cash session on Wall Street. However, futures markets will continue to trade although trading hours will be shortened.
