Economic calendar: what to expect from FOMC members' speeches after US CPI data 📃

7:06 AM 16 May 2024

Yesterday's CPI data stirred investors' emotions and was a catalyst for dynamic gains in the stock markets. However, the report itself was not particularly satisfying, and persistent inflation in the services sector remains. Therefore, today's statements from FOMC representatives could be particularly interesting. The bankers may try to cool the euphoria present in the market. It should be noted that the latest comments from the bankers cast doubt on any rate cuts this year. Today we will learn the opinions of Barr, Mester, Harker, and Bostic after yesterday's reports. Investors' attention should focus on comments related to the CPI data and the weaker retail sales report.

Besides the speeches by FOMC representatives, we will also learn important data from the US housing market. At 01:30 PM BST, a report on the number of housing starts and building permits in the USA is to be published. Expectations indicate a moderate improvement in this sector compared to the previous month.
